Course Description
This course was developed to give practical, wise, and helpful information to professionals working with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) clients. BPD is characterized by behavior patterns including multiple types of psychological instability and impulsiveness, and often involves fear of abandonment, self-destructive actions, and a risk of suicide.
The information for the course was taken from Integrated Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, by John D. Preston, Psy. D, which attempts to blend the most effective techniques available for Borderline Personality Disorder into a clear plan to help the client achieve lasting change in the course of brief therapy. The course includes case examples and would be appropriate for clinicians or for anyone who is interested in gaining insight into this challenging disorder.
Course Objectives
1. Recognize the difficulties that professionals face in treating BPD clients as well as the diagnostic and etiological issues that are pertinent to these individuals, including psychological and interpersonal factors.
2. Evaluate core characteristics and treatment implications, fundamental
treatment decisions, common features in various treatments, and specific treatment strategies that increase the potential for therapeutic success with borderline clients.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of methods to reduce emotional arousal, dyscontrol, and self-destructive behaviors in BPD clients.
4. Identify psychotropic medications that can be used to help hysteroid-
dysphoric, schizotypal, and angry-impulsive borderlines as well as
those who have a co-occurring disorder.
5. Compare short-term versus long-term treatment options and ways to
realistically serve clients without compromising treatment standards.
