This course has been adapted from, Motivational Interviewing, written by William Miller, PhD, a professor and expert on substance abuse and addiction, and Stephen Rollnick, PhD, a professor and clinical psychologist.The book focuses on the clinical approach of motivational interviewing, which is a client-centered, directive method of enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.The context, practice, and learning of motivational interviewing are discussed along with practical applications in the addiction treatment field, as well as in general medical care, health promotion, social work, and corrections.Several contributing authors who have adapted motivational interviewing are also included in this very informative book.
Course Objectives
1. Recognize the reasons that people change, the dilemma of change itself, and how to facilitate change.
2. Explore the practice of motivational interviewing, including resistance and motivation for change, change talk, commitment to change, and ethical considerations in the practice of motivational interviewing.
3. Evaluate the process of learning motivational interviewing in order to strengthen counseling skills in this area and be able to facilitate the quality learning experiences in others.
4. Recognize the uses of motivational interviewing in medical and public health settings, with criminal justice populations, with adolescents and young adults, with couples, and in the treatment of dual disorders.
5. Exhibit an understanding of the role of values in motivational interviewing, the relationship between motivational interviewing and treatment-adherence, and the advantages and disadvantages of group-basedmotivational interviewing.
