Course Description:
This course describes the effectiveness of group therapy in the treatment of substance use disorders. Discussed are the leadership skills, concepts and techniques necessary for successful group treatment. This course contains applicable treatment modalities for all types of groups and should be considered applicable to many settings and not just a substance abuse treatment setting.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:
1) List the advantages of group treatment with substance abusing populations
2) Discuss the five group models recommended by the consensus panel for substance abuse treatment
3) Identify and describe the specialized groups in substance abuse treatment
4) Describe the various stages of group therapy
5) Gain an understanding of the leadership skills, concepts and techniques necessary for successful group treatment
