The purpose of this guide is to assist States and communities in planning, designing, and implementing culturally competent disaster mental health services for survivors of natural and human-caused disasters of all scales. It complements information previously published by FEMA and CMHS on disaster mental health response and recovery.
Course Objectives
1. Evaluate essential cultural factors and differences while determining the various mental health needs of disaster survivors.
2. Identify the guiding principles, recommendations, and resources necessary to assist individuals and communities affected directly or indirectly by natural and human-made disasters.
3. Describe how the cultural competence continuum can be implemented in organizations and communities in order to establish benchmarks and measure progress following disasters.
4. Examine important considerations and guidelines for working with people from other cultures as well as staff attributes and skills needed to develop culturally relevant services.
