This course was developed from information provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, National Institute of Mental Health to give a brief overview of autism spectrum disorders. It includes descriptions, indicators, social symptoms, assessment, treatment, and directions in research for these disorders. Estimations indicate that autism spectrum disorders effect up to1 in every 150 children in the United States, so this course is appropriate for anyone in the medical, mental health, education, or social work field who may come into contact with these children or with teens and adults with autism.
Course Objectives
1. Define autism spectrum disorders and describe indicators, symptoms, communication difficulties, and problems that may accompany these disorders.
2. Evaluate the process of diagnosis including screening and assessment tools, and review treatment options for autism spectrum disorders including behavioral management techniques and medication.
3. Recognize the challenges that face adults with autism and other similar disorders.
4. Explore research into the causes, the diagnosis, and the treatment of autism spectrum disorders, including research into the connection between brain structures and autism.
