Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a components-based psychosocial treatment model that incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral, attachment, humanistic, empowerment, and family therapy models. It includes several core treatment components designed to be provided in a flexible manner to address the unique needs of each child and family. There is strong scientific evidence that this therapy works in treating trauma symptoms in children, adolescents, and their parents. This model was initially developed to address trauma associated with child sexual abuse and has more recently been adapted for use with
children who have experienced a wide array of traumatic experiences, including multiple traumas.
Course Objectives
1. Identify the components of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) in order to weigh the pros and cons of adopting the model for use with traumatized children.
2. Describe the process of implementing TF-CBT including assessing organizational readiness, providing pre-implementation training, installing TF-CBT into the organization, and developing a plan to sustain the practice of this treatment method.
3. Determine the role of the therapist, clinical supervisor, and administrator in providing TF-CBT, and evaluate client selection criteria, screening and assessment, time requirements, and skill acquisition needed to deliver and maintain TF-CBT.
4. Recognize how TF-CBT may reduce trauma symptoms for children while also helping parents and caregivers through the healing process.
