The objective of this course is to provide general knowledge about buprenorphine products for the pharmacological treatment of opioid addiction based on information gathered from the Technical Assistance Publication, Buprenorphine: A Guide For Nurses. The publication was designed as a resource to help nurses working with community physicians to improve treatment outcomes for individuals receiving office-based treatment for opioid addiction. It contains important general information on the pharmacology, safety profile, adverse effects, interactions, cautions, contraindications, and abuse potential of buprenorphine products as well as strategies to help the provider conduct screenings and assessments, monitor treatment, and provide appropriate counseling and supportive services. This would be an excellent course for anyone who is interested in the treatment of opioid addiction.
Course Objectives
1. Exhibit an understanding of basic buprenorphine pharmacology, including pharmacological properties, dosing, side effects, and withdrawal associated with these products.
2. Demonstrate knowledge on protocols for the use of buprenorphine products in medically supervised withdrawal (detoxification) and maintenance treatment services.
3. Identify strategies to ensure effective communication and appropriate assessment of patients’ readiness to change, and recognize appropriate methods to improve the care provided to individuals who are addicted to opioids, by ensuring that psychosocial counseling is delivered concurrently with pharmacological interventions.
4. Evaluate the treatment provider's role in involving patients in the development of the treatment plan, and working with the patient and the interdisciplinary team to individualize the plan for meeting the patients’ needs.
